2017 Scholarship Recipients

 MACF is proud to honor 83 local students by awarding over $200,000 in scholarships. Congratulations to all the recipients!

Health & Quality of Life Grants have been awarded.

The Foundation's Advisory Board of Directors recently made grant decisions and awarded over $40,000 to local non-profits.  
Recipients were:

Safetynet Inc., Delvin L. Hairston Memorial Fund, First United Methodist Church, American Red Cross, Piedmont Virginia Dental Health Foundation, VA Department of Health, Southern Area Agency on Aging Inc. and Tackfully Teamed Riding Academy, Inc.

List of Named Endowment Funds

Donor-Advised Funds

This fund type enables you to make recommendations each year as to grants from the fund. You can make the same or different recommendations each year. 

Anonymous Fund #1: This fund supports a wide range of community needs.

Anonymous Fund #2: This fund will honor the charitable interests of the donor family and will perpetuate their involvement in the community. 

Bennett S. Chaney Fund: Established and advised by Bennett Chaney, this fund supports a wide range of important community needs.

Gael and Smith Chaney Fund: Established and advised by Gael and Smith, this fund supports a wide range of important community needs.

Dr. Bob and Kay Finch Fund: Established by Dr. and Mrs. Finch, this fund will honor the charitable interests of the donor family and support a wide range of important community needs. 

Captain Til Lester Fund (In memory of G.T. "Cap't Til" and Lottie Shelton Lester) was established by George W. Lester II and will honor the charitable interests of the donor family and perpetuate their involvement in the community.

Peggy Johnson Hope for Children Fund: Established by the Johnson family, this fund honors their charitable interests with a focus on needy children.

Jim and Eliza Severt Fund: Established and advised by the Severts, this fund supports a wide range of important community needs.

Unrestricted Funds

This type of fund provides the best long-term flexibility to meet a broad range of important community needs. 

William H. Bason Jr. Unrestricted Fund: This fund, established by Chett Bason, will support a wide range of community needs and opportunities.

Martinsville Area Unrestricted Fund: This fund supports a wide range of community needs.

Kathryn Ascough Smith Memorial Fund: Established in memory of Kay Smith, this fund will support a wide range of community needs.

Ivey C. Stone Fund: Established by Ivey Stone, this fund supports a wide range of community needs.

Nelson and Christina Teague Fund: Established by Nelson and Christina Teague, this fund supports a wide range of important community needs.

Women in Philanthropy Fund: This fund was established to provide a perpetual source of grant funding for the Women In Philanthropy initiative.

Field of Interest Funds

This fund type gives you the option of restricting grants to a particular charitable area of interest. Grant recipients within that field are selected by our Board.

Cancer Center Fund: Provides and promotes health services and educational, diagnostic and treatment resources to victims of cancer and related conditions in the Martinsville Community.

Jerry Smith Chaney Memorial Fund: Provides assistance to needy cancer patients who are residents of the Martinsville Community and who are receiving treatment at any licensed cancer treatment facility from any qualified healthcare professional, and such assistance may be provided directly to such needy residents and/or by grants to organizations exempt from federal income tax.

Hermes Family Fund*: Generally to provide and promote breast health services and encourage development of diagnostic and treatment options for residents of the Martinsville Community and to support other charitable activities and projects that improve the quality of life in the Martinsville Community.

Hospice Fund*: Provides assistance and services to any needy resident of the Martinsville Community with end-of-life medical needs and expenses, and such assistance may be provided directly to such needy residents and/or by grants to organizations exempt from federal income tax.

Martinsville Area Endowment Fund*: Provide health services to needy residents of the Martinsville Community, to support health-related teaching, educational and research programs and generally to provide for the medical care of the Martinsville Community.

Medical Education Fund*: Supports continuing medical education for students in the Martinsville Community and healthcare professionals who practice in the Martinsville Community, regardless of those professionals' employment relationship or affiliation.

Ravenel Oncology Center Fund: Established by Dr. Nigel Goodchild, this fund provides a broad range of support and care to needy patients who have been treated at the Ravenel Oncology Center.

Designated Funds

This fund type allows you to choose up front a specific nonprofit organization or group of organizations to receive long-term support.

Bill and Irene Kennedy Fund: Established by Bill and Irene, this fund supports Piedmont Arts and the Patrick Henry Community College Educational Foundation.

David "Crockett" Chatham Memorial Fund: Established by Hugh Chatham and family members, this fund will provide assistance and services to needy residents of the Martinsville Community with end-of-life medical needs and expenses.

Scholarship Funds

Scholarship Funds help men and women pursue educational opportunities. 

N.R. Burroughs Educational Fund: Provides scholarships to further the education of qualified and deserving men and women who live within a 200 mile radius of the Henry County Circuit Court.

Kelsey Nicole Cooper Scholarship Fund: Provides scholarship assistance to students from the Martinsville Henry County community with an emphasis on volunteerism.

Carolyn and Bill Franck Scholarship Fund: Provides scholarship assistance to students from the Martinsville Henry County community.

Joel C. Hall and Elizabeth L. Hall Educational Fund: Provides scholarships to qualified and needy young men and women who will enroll in, or are enrolled in, an accredited four year college or university that is associated with the United Methodist Church. While applicants may pursue any course of study, preference will be given to students studying to become a Methodist minister. Further, preference will be given to students from the City of Martinsville, and the counties of Henry, Patrick, Franklin and Pittsylvania.

Mimi Hart Memorial Police Scholarship Fund: Provides educational scholarships to deserving men and women who are children or grandchildren of employees of the Martinsville City Police Department. 

Hooker Educational Scholarship Fund: Provides higher education scholarships to deserving men and women who are children or spouses of Hooker Furniture Corporation (HFC) employees.

LaPrade Educational Fund: Provides scholarships to further the education of young men and women who appear to be able, deserving, and in real need of financial assistance in their post high school education in the fields of either technical, vocational, academic or professional education, with preference given to students from the City of Martinsville, Henry County, Franklin County and Pittsylvania County.

Lester Educational Fund: Provides scholarships to help students obtain an education in a profession or vocation, with preference given to students from Martinsville, Henry County and Franklin County.

Martinsville Kiwanis Club - J. Lawson Dyer Key Club Scholarship Fund: Established by the Martinsville Kiwanis Club to provide educational scholarships.

MFP Scholarship Fund: Provides scholarship assistance to students pursuing a degree in health, business or religion.

Rangeley Educational Fund: Provides scholarships to further the education of young men and women pursuing study in technical, vocational, academic or professional fields, with preference given to students from Martinsville and Henry County.

Benny Summerlin Scholarship Fund: Provide scholarships to students pursuing a career in public service and/or public safety. 

Agency Funds

Nonprofits can establish a fund solely for their benefit within the Foundation rather than separately creating and managing such a fund themselves. Donors who are interested in helping provide significant long-term support to the named agencies are invited to contribute assets to these "open" funds at any time.

Martinsville City Public Schools Endowment Fund: Established by the Martinsville City Public Schools.

Martinsville Henry County Family YMCA Endowment Fund: Established by the YMCA to benefit its purposes.
